Ibrahim Amir retains National Champion

Ibrahim Amir successfully defends his title by winning again at the 3rd National Pool Championship 2010 at A-Que Snooker & Pool Club. He beats seasoned campaigner Kovic Chong with a scoreline of 13-8.

After a slow and struggling start into his semi final match, Amir aka Rico was unable to perform to par as his SEA Games team mate Benjamin Lee played well with the scores very close. After reaching 8-8, Amir recovered and went to win 3 racks in a row to advance into the Final.

Kovic Chong was also up against a tough opponent as he played last year’s Runner-up and seeded No 2 Tony Chong. Racks were won and cleared by each player without much space to breathe until it reached 9-9. In rack 19, after a few safety exchange, Tony cleared all but missed the 9 ball to give Kovic the first step on the hill. Kovic later on then cleared rack 20 to progress into the Final.

The Final affair was a repeat of the 2006 XZ Pool Tour Grand Final with Amir emerging as the eventual winner and this time around Kovic was determined to not repeat the same feat and snatch back victory. Amir grabbed an early 3-0 lead into the Final but was quickly leveled by Kovic at 3-3. A few racks were exchanged which stopped at 7-7 and Amir went to extend his lead to 11-7, leaving 2 racks away from retaining the title. Kovic cleared and won a rack but that was all as Amir went on to win the remaining racks to lift the trophy and earning the title of 2010 National Pool Champion.

Ann Seng wins Leg 1 of NRSC2010

After being absent from the winner's podium for almost 2 years, Ng Ann Seng finally found his golden touch as he beats Lai Chee Wei 4-3 to win Leg 1 of the National Ranking Snooker Championship 2010 at The Ball Room.

After winning a tough semi final match, Ann Seng seemed to be on a roll after the Final commenced with an early lead of 3-0, almost denying Chee Wei any chance of potting or winning a single frame. But as witnessed and self produced by himself in his semi final match, Lai found his playing form late into Frame 4 and won it to avoid a whitewash. He continued to win Frame 5 and 6 to level the match at 3-3 with Ann Seng totally lost and out of focus.

In what seemed to be a deja vu, Ann Seng gained back concentration to avoid what Rory faced in the semi final match and gained a minor lead in Frame 7. After potting a red, Ann Seng snookered Chee Wei behind the Yellow ball, which later resulted in 10 Foul and Miss, giving Ann Seng a 50 point lead. After a few safety exchanges, Ann Seng scored another 10 points and leaving Chee Wei requiring snookers coming back to the table. Chee Wei then shaked his head and conceded the frame and match to a better Ann Seng after a 3 hour ordeal.

Below are the results for the Final:-

Ng Ann Seng 4 vs 3 Lai Chee Wei
61-22, 63-2, 70-16, 1-63, 49-71, 17-60, 75-15

Semi Finals Results - NRSC2010 Leg 1

Although both semi finals concluded with the same scoreline of 4-3, it was a two totally different scenario when both matches started at 5pm. Playing over the Best of 7 frames, the first Semi Final was a neck to neck affair as Lim Zhi Wei aka Small Kid played Ng Ann Seng.

Missing from the snooker scene for quite a while, Lim's comeback was much discussed after he reached the Quarter Finals of the National Snooker Championship. This time he made it through to the Semi Final, beating current National Champion Moh Keen Hoo and Jimmy Teo, hoping to make a comeback and win a tournament. First 6 frames were shared equally with both Lim and Ng winning 3 frames each to level at 3-3, needing the 7th and final frame to determine the winner. Ng had an early advantage leading in the final frame, but missed halfway giving Lim a chance needing to clear all the balls on the table to secure a spot in the Final. However, a fatal mistake on the Brown ball denied Lim and Ng cleared to the Pink ball, winning 4-3 advancing into the Final.

On the other Semi Final after the match commenced, Rory Thor appeared as the obvious winner as he lead 3-0, needing only 1 frame to advance to the Final. But Lai Chee Wei was not going to give up easily, as he refocused to win frame by frame, leveling the match at 3-3. Lai further extended the lead in the final frame as he made a 30 break followed by scoring another 13 points after breaking off. Rory Thor, appearing shaken, could not find his rhythm and found himself requiring snookers with 3 balls remaining on the table. After a pull and tug war, Lai potted the final red, winning the match and booked himself a spot in the Final.

Final commences at 10pm with Lai Chee Wei playing against Ng Ann Seng over Best of 7 frames.

Below are the scores for the Semi Finals:-

Rory Thor Chuan Leong 3 vs 4 Lai Chee Wei

Double Joy for Moh Keen Hoo winning 24th National Snooker Championship 2010

Today he is the National Snooker Champion, tomorrow he takes on another role and becomes the Man of the day. Moh Keen Hoo couldn't ask for more joy and delight after winning the 24th National Snooker Championship 2010, adding a bonus cash prize of RM5000 and extends his celebration to tomorrow with his wedding ceremony taking place.

The match started slightly later due to the delay completion of the Semi Finals but expectations were high as the Championship witnessed 2 newcomers playing in the Final. Moh Keen Hoo, though had much success overseas including winner of the Asian Junior Championship, still could not add this title to his belt after years of trial. Lai Chee Wei, silver medalist in the 25th SEA Games Mens Snooker Double, was also playing his first final of the National Championship, hoping to be victorious this time around.

Once started, Lai wasted no time and sped off to an early 2 frames lead. Still trying to catch his rhythm, Moh played the 3rd frame strategically, hoping to disrupt Lai's playing form and won the frame at the colours. After that Moh seemed unstoppable as he wins another 4 frames in a row, leading 5-3 and only 1 frame from victory. Lai wasn't about to give up easily and made a 65 break in frame 8 to reduce the lead to 5-3. But that was the last frame Lai would win in this Championship as Moh totally dominated frame 9 and won the frame and match to claim the National Snooker Champion title. He walks away with RM5000 cash prize, the Challenge trophy and the title, with a smile as wide as he could stretch.

Below is the match breakdown of the Final :-

Final
Moh Keen Hoo 6-3 Lai Chee Wei
8-68(52), 44-68, 70-59, 69-53, 63-57, 60-16, 68-41, 5-105(65), 66-24

Day 8 - Semi Finals Results

Both being a nail biting, neck to neck matches, Moh Keen Hoo finally had his revenge as he won Mohd Reza on the final frame to advance to the Final. The Blue Ball that gave Mohd Reza his semi final victory last year had also played an important role this year as it caused him his loss in frame 8 when he was leading 4-3. Having potted the Blue Ball, it went on to hit the Green Ball and went in off. It was downhill from then as Moh Keen Hoo went on to win the remaining 2 frames and match to go into his first National Championship Final.

On the other semi final, Rory Thor Chuan Leong seemed to have lost his Midas touch which saw him won last year's Championship. Although leading 3-2 halfway with his 2nd century break of 107 points, he still uncomfortable with his playing form and was unable to get past his SEA Games Doubles partner, Lai Chee Wei. And it was proven as after frame 5, Lai went all out to capture and win 3 frames in a row to seal off the match with a 5-3 scoreline.

Semi Finals Results
Rory Thor Chuan Leong 3-5 Lai Chee Wei
109-1, 51-82, 59-66, 76-31, 112(107)-21, 9-68, 36-75, 36-66

Moh Keen Hoo 5-4 Mohd Reza
72-42, 8-123(59), 53-43, 26-48, 63-48, 2-83(64), 53-58, 70-53, 83-32

Day 7 Results

Rory Thor Chuan Leong was only one black away from being the first Malaysian to compile a maximum 147 break in the local tournament scene. Already potted 14 reds and 13 blacks, Rory ended slightly off position on the 14th black and found it difficult to pot and place for the last red. Taking a deep breath, he went down, feathered a few times and punched the black hard, but only to find it rattling in the jaws of the pocket and went up the table. What was thought as a miss suddenly became a chance as the black slowly rolled back to the same pocket slowly and still only managed to find the jaws again. Heaving a sigh of disappointment, Rory has only managed the sole century break of the Championship with 105 points, winning his Last 16 match against Azhar Red 4-0.

During the Quarter Finals, the Top 4 seeded managed to advance to the Semi Finals without much hassle except for Seeded No 4, Lai Chee Wei who found himself against a tough opponent, Goh Boon Sun. Goh, hailing from Penang, was playing well and was level at 1-1 with Lai into the match. Lai regained playing form and reeled 2 frames in a row to lead 3-1, 1 frame from going into the Semi Final. Goh did not give in easily and captured the 5th frame to narrow the gap to 3-2. But that was the last frame he could only win in the Championship as Lai wrapped up frame 6 and match to win 4-2 to setup tomorrow's semi final match against Seeded No 1 and defending champion Rory Thor Chuan Leong.

Tomorrow's Semi Final matches have been rescheduled to start at 3pm, playing over Best if 9 frames where Rory Thor Chuan Leong will play Lai Chee Wei and Moh Keen Hoo will be playing against Mohd Reza.

The Final will be at 7pm, playing over Best of 11 frames.
