Lai captures 2011's finale event

(l-r) Rory Thor, Kevin Keow from Climax Indah and Lai Chee Wei
Lai Chee Wei wins the last leg of the XZ Snooker Tour 2011 at Climax Indah Snooker as he beats Rory Thor 4-2 shortly after the midnight chime.

Both players displayed exceptional match form as they discarded recent SEA Games gold medalist Sam Chong and former National Champion Patrick Ooi effortlessly, registering the same score line of 4-1.

The Final started shortly after 10pm but the crowd were still around despite the late hours, eagerly waiting for some intense action between both players to spark. After breaking off, It was Lai who drew first blood as he reeled off the first 2 frames to lead 2-0, but was quickly stopped in his tracks as Rory replied equally strong to level the match at 2-2.

Lai in action as Rory looks on
After a short break, Lai regained his form to snatch Frame 5 at 51-9, leading 3-2 and needing only one more frame to seal the deal. After a rally of safety and misses, Lai broke away, clearing up a scrappy frame and went on to win the match 4-2.

Lai goes home with the cash prize of RM 3,000 and the Champion's trophy whilst Rory settled for the Runner up's trophy and cash prize of RM 1,500.

Gold for Snooker Doubles

(l-r) Sam Chong and Rory Thor after winning the Final
Malaysia first gold medal from the Billiard Sports came from the Snooker Doubles. Represented by Sam Chong AMN and Rory Thor Chuan Leong, they whitewashed Singapore's pair Marvin Lim Chun Kiat and Tommy Ang Boon Chin, making it a sweet revenge for Malaysia.

With breaks of 111, 64 and 109 to win the Final, it was even sweeter for Rory as he lost to the same pair in the Laos SEA Games 2009, where he partnered Lai Chee Wei and only could settle for Silver last time.

Sam Chong, who has been absent from the international scene about 10 years, had decided to take up the nation's call for the Games and to guide the younger generation using his vast experience of match play.

Rory Thor will be eyeing for his second Gold medal as he will be playing in the Snooker Singles, alongside with Lai Chee Wei.

Sam Chong and Rory Thor in the Final

Sam Chong during practice session
Sam Chong and Rory Thor has advanced into the Snooker Doubles Final of the 26th SEA Games 2011 in Palembang by white washing long time nemesis Thailand 3-0 in the Semi Finals this evening.

In contrast to the earlier morning match against host country Indonesia, where they narrowly escaped an early round elimination, both players seemed much more comfortable and confident going into the match. The Thai combination included Noppon Saengkham, whom recently won the Top Two Invitational Snooker Championship 2011 in Kuala Lumpur and Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon, current IBSF World U-21 Champion.

They will be playing against either Singapore or Myanmar, whom is playing in the other Semi Final.

Mohd Reza wins at The Cues

Mohd Reza in action
It was a very narrow gap but Mohd Reza managed to squeeze through, as he beats Rory Thor on the final frame to win Leg 13 of XZ Snooker Tour 2011 at The Cues Snooker, Kampar.

Reza came into the Final in tip top condition as he whitewashed Lai Chee Wei in the Semi Final match whilst on the side, Rory too had little trouble in winning former Asian Champion, Sam Chong 4-1 to advance.

As the Final started, Rory immediately took the 1st frame but was replied aggressively by Reza as he took the next 3 frames to lead at 3-1, needing only one more frame to secure the title. Rory, after a short break, came back to the table, trying to regain form and found himself winning the next 2 frames to level the match at 3-3.

It all boils down to the final frame as both players shook hands to cue off. As the frame progressed, neither player wanted to budge for the other as excellent snookers and great safety play was exchanged between them. Eventually it was Reza who proved to be the better player as he wins the final frame.

Mohd Reza walks away with the Champion's trophy as Rory Thor can only settle for the Runner up's trophy.

Mohd Reza 4 vs 3 Rory Thor

Corteza victorious at Golden Break

Favourite for the title from the moment he registered for the event, Lee Van Corteza did not disappoint all his fans who came to watch and support him in the Final and played well to defeat Chinese Taipei's Ko Ping Chung 13-8 to lift the Champion's trophy.

Lee Van Corteza with trophy and mock cheque
Corteza came into the Final with a very convincing win over Indonesia's Riyan Setiawan in the Semi Final whilst Ko Ping Chung had to overcome a more difficult opponent, his elder brother Ko Pin Yi before advancing.

When the Final broke off, Corteza immediately went to a 3-0 lead before Ping Chung could return the attack. Ping Chung was literally playing catching up throughout the whole match as he was trailing 2-4 and 7-9. Corteza, being the more experienced player, was in control throughout and gave no chance the youngster to retaliate. His Semi Final match play form continued through to the Final and without even looking back, eventually won it at 13-8.

Lee Van Corteza flies home with cash prize of USD 7,000 and the Champion's trophy while Ko Ping Chung can only take the Runner up trophy for the consecutive 2nd time and cash prize of USD 3,500.

Corteza walks into the Final

Lee Van Corteza played near effortlessly and took only 45 minutes to dismiss Indonesia's Riyan Setiawan with a winning score of 11-1, setting up the Final match against Ko Ping Chung from Chinese Taipei.

Lee Van Corteza
Corteza, as the favourite to lift the trophy, wasted no time as he sped off to a 9-0 lead within 30 minutes after the lag, leaving clueless Riyan sitting in his chair, desperately looking for a glimpse of hope. A mistake in Rack 10 finally gave Riyan 1 rack but that was all as Corteza picked up the next 2 racks, to win 11-1.

Final match will be between Asia's two pool giants as Philippines Lee Van Corteza, 2010 US 10 Ball Open Champion takes on Chinese Taipei Ko Ping Chung later at 7pm.

Ping Chung in the Final

Ko Ping Chung
Ko Ping Chung beats his elder brother Ko Pin Yi to make it to the Final of the 3rd Golden Break 9 Ball Asian Invitational Championship 2011. This is his 2nd consecutive appearance in the Final, following last year's outing only to lose out to Ibrahim Amir and claim the Runner up prize.

The score was neck to neck in the first few racks as neither both wanted to give way to the other. Then Ping Chung raced off to a 7-4 and 6-10 lead, requiring only 1 more rack to win but was quickly denied as Pin Yi closed in one more rack, reducing the gap to trail 3 racks. But that was all he could do as Ping Chung slammed the door shut in his face and reeled off Rack 18 to win 11-7.

Ko Ping Chung will be playing at 7pm later against the winner between the Semi Final match of Lee Van Corteza and Riyan Setiawan.

Ko and Lee in Last Four

Ko Pin Yi
Both Ko Pin Yi and Lee Van Corteza, hot favourites to lift the trophy, have made it to the Last Four as both defeats Do The Kien from Vietnam and Toh Lian Han from Singapore respectively in the Quarter Finals round.

Lee Van Corteza
Lee played consistently well throughout his match as Toh was left sitting in his seat, trying hard to catch up but still failed to find a way out. Ko, on the other match, met another top form player as Do too played well and was returning his punch for punch. Eventually it was Ko who prevailed and merely won the match at 11-9.

The other two semi finalist, Riyan Setiawan defeated Bobby Lee from Hong Kong after trailing at 1-6 and 2-7, to eventually win it at 11-8 whilst Ko Ping Chung had an easier ride, beating his own teammate Fu Che Wei 11-5, without much effort to advance.

Tomorrow's Semi Finals matches will be played in 2 sessions. The Ko brothers, Ko Ping Chung and Ko Pin Yi will be playing at 1pm followed by the match between Riyan Setiawan and Lee Van Corteza at 4pm. Final will be competed at 7pm followed by the Prize Giving Ceremony after that.
