Ibrahim wins at Golden Break

Ibrahim "Ah Chai" Amir
Ibrahim Amir couldn't help but smile all the way to the bank as he wins the 2nd Golden Break 9 Ball Invitational Championship 2010 at Golden Break Snooker & Pool Club. He beats 14 year old Ko Pin Chung from Chinese Taipei by 13-10.

Before the Final began, everyone while waiting for the match to begin, were wondering whether Chinese Taipei will repeat last year's feat and bring the trophy back. Ko with his fluent matchplay and playing his first overseas tournament final seemed totally calm while Ibrahim was his usual self bouncing from one group to another, chit chatting, both waiting for the emcee to announce the match to start.

Winning the lag, Ko immediately cleared 2 racks to lead 2-0 but Ibrahim stopped his stride to win Rack 2 to narrow the gap. Ko won the next 2 racks to extend the lead to 4-1, leaving everyone watching the match sweating in their seats. Ibrahim managed to win the next 2 racks, to narrow back the gap to one rack but was not for long as Ko yet agains extends it to 6-3.

When the score reached 7-5 with Ko leading, Ibrahim pulled out his bag of tricks and immediately turned around the match, winning 5 racks straight to lead 10-7. Ko was totally stumped and seem to have lost his form and could only win one rack while Ibrahim wins another two to reach the hill, needing only one more rack from 12-8. After a short break, Ko came back to the table to clear 2 racks, again reducing his trail to two gaps. But that was only all he could do as Ibrahim with a good safety in Rack 23, forced Ko to give him one more opportunity which he capitalized and went to win rack and match, winning the Championship with a scoreline of 13-10.

Ibrahim Amir with his trophy and mock cheque
What was even better for the night was The Management of Golden Break Snooker & Pool Club decided to top up RM 8,000 as a bonus for Ibrahim's effort and outstanding performance, and also successfully retaining the trophy and title in Malaysia. They also gave Patrick Ooi an additional RM 2,000 for his Semi Final effort. Ibrahim walks away from the Championship with cash prize of USD 5,000 and RM 8,000, a very glimmering trophy and the Champion's title.

Ibrahim Amir hopes to keep trophy in Malaysia

Ibrahim Amir looks at a shot during Semi Final
Ibrahim Amir hopes to keep the Champion's trophy in Malaysia and also the cash prize of USD 5000 from the 2nd Golden Break 9 Ball Invitational Championship 2010. He advances into the Final playing against Ko Pin Chung from Chinese Taipei, after defeating World Ranked No 7 Antonio Lining from Philippines by 11-8.

It was a neck to neck match as both players displayed nerve breaking accuracy and tactical safety play to try and break each other's rhythm. Neither one was giving up and rarely were there mistakes to allow the other back at the table. But after leveling the match back at 8-8, it was a one way traffic as Ibrahim went on to claim 3 straight racks to book himself a place in the Final, leaving Antonio behind in the smokes.

Ibrahim Amir will play Ko Pin Chung in the Final later 8pm.

14 year old Chinese Taipei whiz kid Ko Pin Chung will be appearing in his first oversea tournament final later tonight, after defeating Patrick Ooi from Malaysia 11-6 in the Semi Final of the 2nd Golden Break 9 Ball Invitational Championship 2010.

After lagging off for the break, Patrick cleared to claim Rack 1 but Ko replied to clear 7 racks in a row, leading by 7-1. Ko missed in Rack 9 to let Patrick back on the table to claim 1 more rack but lost 2 more to trail at 9-2.  Rack 12 and 13 were split between them, at 10-3 with Ko needing only 1 more rack to book a spot in his first ever overseas final. Patrick however was not going to give up easily and won the next 3 racks to narrow the gap to 10-6, but that was all he could do as Ko broke and cleared Rack 17 to advance into the Final.

Former Asian Champion Ooi Chin Kay makes an impressive comeback as he claims Leg 6 of National Ranking Snooker Championship 2010 at Red Ball Snooker. He beats 2 time winner and current top seed, Rory Thor with a score of 4-1.

After losing his playing form this recent few years, he has made a good comeback to the snooker scene this year, playing in numerous tournaments. In the Semi Final, he beats his doubles partner, Sam Chong, whom he won gold medal with in the Snooker Doubles of the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. Although Sam made a high break of 118 points in Frame 5 to lead 3-2, that didn't stop Ooi and he won the next 2 frames to advance into the Final. His other opponent, Rory Thor, made the Championship's highest break of 134 points in Frame 3 and went on to win Ng Ann Seng 4-1, to go into the Final for the 3rd time.

Ooi carried his playing form into the Final against Rory and went straight into leading 2-0, but Rory replied back winning the 3rd frame to narrow the lead. Ooi immediately stopped Rory in his track and won the next 2 frames to win the Championship, walking away with RM 2,500 cash prize and a big smile on his face, not seen for a long long time.
