After losing his playing form this recent few years, he has made a good comeback to the snooker scene this year, playing in numerous tournaments. In the Semi Final, he beats his doubles partner, Sam Chong, whom he won gold medal with in the Snooker Doubles of the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. Although Sam made a high break of 118 points in Frame 5 to lead 3-2, that didn't stop Ooi and he won the next 2 frames to advance into the Final. His other opponent, Rory Thor, made the Championship's highest break of 134 points in Frame 3 and went on to win Ng Ann Seng 4-1, to go into the Final for the 3rd time.
Ooi carried his playing form into the Final against Rory and went straight into leading 2-0, but Rory replied back winning the 3rd frame to narrow the lead. Ooi immediately stopped Rory in his track and won the next 2 frames to win the Championship, walking away with RM 2,500 cash prize and a big smile on his face, not seen for a long long time.
