Patrick Ooi triumphant at 2K Open

(l-r) Patrick Ooi and Lai Chee Wei
It seemed like only it was yesterday but Patrick who has long been missing from podium finishes, taught the youngsters of today a lesson or two on how to play snooker. His victory over Lai Chee Wei at 2K Open Snooker Championship 2010 proves that he still has a few tricks up his sleeve and is not to be taken lightly.

Hailing from Perak and currently based in One Cuez Snooker, Ipoh, his match play form was comparable when he won the National Championship twice in 2002 and 2006. Whenever he steps up to the table, fear is instilled into his opponent as he takes them by the neck. And this time was no different as he faced Lai in the Final.

Both were playing conservatively as it commenced and the match was leveled at 2-2 with neither one willing to budge off from each other's sight. After a short break, Patrick came back with a change of strategy, opting for the aggressive approach which paid off well, giving him frame 5, needing only 1 more frame to seal victory. Frame 6 appeared to sway from left to right but Patrick jumped on the first chance and made a break of 55 with one red left on the table, missing on the crucial pink to give Lai a last chance. 2 careless mistake by Patrick saw the points difference narrow down but Lai was not able to capitalize on the opportunity, and immediately allowed Patrick to pounce in, winning frame 6 and match. He walks away with cash prize of RM 3,000 and the Champion's trophy.
