Corteza victorious at Golden Break

Favourite for the title from the moment he registered for the event, Lee Van Corteza did not disappoint all his fans who came to watch and support him in the Final and played well to defeat Chinese Taipei's Ko Ping Chung 13-8 to lift the Champion's trophy.

Lee Van Corteza with trophy and mock cheque
Corteza came into the Final with a very convincing win over Indonesia's Riyan Setiawan in the Semi Final whilst Ko Ping Chung had to overcome a more difficult opponent, his elder brother Ko Pin Yi before advancing.

When the Final broke off, Corteza immediately went to a 3-0 lead before Ping Chung could return the attack. Ping Chung was literally playing catching up throughout the whole match as he was trailing 2-4 and 7-9. Corteza, being the more experienced player, was in control throughout and gave no chance the youngster to retaliate. His Semi Final match play form continued through to the Final and without even looking back, eventually won it at 13-8.

Lee Van Corteza flies home with cash prize of USD 7,000 and the Champion's trophy while Ko Ping Chung can only take the Runner up trophy for the consecutive 2nd time and cash prize of USD 3,500.

Corteza walks into the Final

Lee Van Corteza played near effortlessly and took only 45 minutes to dismiss Indonesia's Riyan Setiawan with a winning score of 11-1, setting up the Final match against Ko Ping Chung from Chinese Taipei.

Lee Van Corteza
Corteza, as the favourite to lift the trophy, wasted no time as he sped off to a 9-0 lead within 30 minutes after the lag, leaving clueless Riyan sitting in his chair, desperately looking for a glimpse of hope. A mistake in Rack 10 finally gave Riyan 1 rack but that was all as Corteza picked up the next 2 racks, to win 11-1.

Final match will be between Asia's two pool giants as Philippines Lee Van Corteza, 2010 US 10 Ball Open Champion takes on Chinese Taipei Ko Ping Chung later at 7pm.

Ping Chung in the Final

Ko Ping Chung
Ko Ping Chung beats his elder brother Ko Pin Yi to make it to the Final of the 3rd Golden Break 9 Ball Asian Invitational Championship 2011. This is his 2nd consecutive appearance in the Final, following last year's outing only to lose out to Ibrahim Amir and claim the Runner up prize.

The score was neck to neck in the first few racks as neither both wanted to give way to the other. Then Ping Chung raced off to a 7-4 and 6-10 lead, requiring only 1 more rack to win but was quickly denied as Pin Yi closed in one more rack, reducing the gap to trail 3 racks. But that was all he could do as Ping Chung slammed the door shut in his face and reeled off Rack 18 to win 11-7.

Ko Ping Chung will be playing at 7pm later against the winner between the Semi Final match of Lee Van Corteza and Riyan Setiawan.

Ko and Lee in Last Four

Ko Pin Yi
Both Ko Pin Yi and Lee Van Corteza, hot favourites to lift the trophy, have made it to the Last Four as both defeats Do The Kien from Vietnam and Toh Lian Han from Singapore respectively in the Quarter Finals round.

Lee Van Corteza
Lee played consistently well throughout his match as Toh was left sitting in his seat, trying hard to catch up but still failed to find a way out. Ko, on the other match, met another top form player as Do too played well and was returning his punch for punch. Eventually it was Ko who prevailed and merely won the match at 11-9.

The other two semi finalist, Riyan Setiawan defeated Bobby Lee from Hong Kong after trailing at 1-6 and 2-7, to eventually win it at 11-8 whilst Ko Ping Chung had an easier ride, beating his own teammate Fu Che Wei 11-5, without much effort to advance.

Tomorrow's Semi Finals matches will be played in 2 sessions. The Ko brothers, Ko Ping Chung and Ko Pin Yi will be playing at 1pm followed by the match between Riyan Setiawan and Lee Van Corteza at 4pm. Final will be competed at 7pm followed by the Prize Giving Ceremony after that.
