Change of Dates for Philippines Open

Due to a very hectic and tight schedule for international pool events in April, the event dates for the 2011 Philippine Open has been changed. The new dates for the Open is now 5 - 11 April 2011 now competed at SkyDome, SM City in Quezon City, Metro Manila. Below is the updated event fact sheet for interested parties.

Rory finally breaks the jinx

Both Rory Thor and Lai Chee Wei have played each other on numerous encounters last year and it has always been Rory on the losing side. But that changed shortly into the New Year as he beats Lai in the Final of Leg 2 National Ranking Snooker Championship 2011 at De FightBlack Snooker to emerge Champion.

As the Final cued off at 830pm, the atmosphere around the table was very tensed as both finalists were working very hard not to let the each other score on the table. After one and a half hours play, the first 4 frames were shared equally between them with Lai breaking in frame 5. It was as though Lai suddenly lost all his form and Rory immediately pounced on the opening to win frame 5, needing only 1 more frame to break the jinx. In frame 6, Lai was still lost and watched helplessly as Rory cleared ball by ball to take the frame and match.

Rory takes home his first title in 2011 along with a big ang pow cash prize of RM 2,500 whilst Lai settled for the runner up's prize money of RM 1,000.

Sebastian and Sam crashes out in Round One

Both Sebastian H'ng and Sam Chong couldn't replicate their form in Leg One where both of them were in the Final.

Playing against former National Billiards player Moh Loon Hong, Sebastian couldn't seem to get his match play form as Moh used his years of experience on the green baize to control the whiz kid from Penang. Moh led 2-0 in the match before Sebastian could give a decent reply and struggled hard to win frame 3, narrowing the gap to 2-1. But that was all he could do as Moh showed him the old school ways of snooker and won frame 4 and match, showing Sebastian the exit.

Sam Chong on the other match just couldn't get anything going at all. Playing Ben Reeves from One Snooker, Sam was like a beginner picking up a cue starting to learn the ways, as he played directionless against Ben. Ben scored effortlessly as Sam made careless mistakes all around.

Frame 3 was a close encounter as it went down to the colours with only a few points difference. Safety plays were changing hands and towards the end Sam was 15 points up with Blue, Pink and Black left on the table, with a glimpse of hope to come back into the match. Ben had to clear all 3 colours to win and a safety that went wrong by Sam gave him the opportunity. Slow and steady, Ben paced himself to take one shot at a time and eventually potted the final Black to win the match.

Moh Loon Hong now plays former National Snooker Champion Patrick Ooi as Ben Reeves plays Michael Tan tomorrow in the Last 16 stage.

International Pool Events in Manila

World Pool Association (WPA) has recently announced that Manila will be playing host to two international 10 ball pool championship which is the 2011 Philippine Open Pool Championships and 2011 World Ten Ball Championship. The Philippine Open will be held from 15-20 April whilst the World Championship will be held from 9-15 May.
